This is a circa 1930's / 1940's Foresters Compass also called a Geologists Compass. This is the Keuffel & Esser model. It has a 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" flat aluminum base and also could be screw-mounted to a tripod in the field. This type was first patented in 1927 and there is one housed at the Smithsonian's Museum of American History Mathematical Tools area.
This is still in perfect working condition.
