William Gary received a patent on Aug 13, 1889 for a coin operated to work with a telephone. He formed the Gary Telephone and Pay Station Co which held a monopoly on pay stations well into the 20th century. Gary Co was acquired by Automatic Electric Company the manufacturing arm of General Telephone Company.
