    This Cast Iron with Brass and Copper is the bottom to the nice brass/copper top that was previously posted to my wonderfulstuff.

      I have taken the liberty to write Dr. Alice Ross (Who wrote the article mentioned in your previous post). Hopefully she will respond.
      In the mean time my thought is exactly what you said before. It could be for baking potatoes, heating small pots of food, etc
      It also served as an "anchor" for the rotesserie.
