This is needlepoint work, not knitted. I'm not sure if you think it is from 1839, but it is not. It's quite recent, but I can't tell you exactly when it was made. but I am not a needlework expert. This is a kit design. The numbers and colors along the right margin show the yarn color and number to help guide the needlepointer, this is especially helpful if the printed pattern is not present. The canvas would have the colors printed right on it, to guide the needlepointer to stitch in the right location. It look like a very large canvas! You can have it professionally stretched and framed if you like.

Beyondbelief I love this piece... I have to agree with stefdesign.... I do not KNOW ANYTHING about sewing or needlepoint etc... HOWEVER, the way the way the girl is dressed... screams late 1940's MAYBE... in 1839 this kind of clothing would be considered... well... uhhh.... risque.... her knee is showing, her arms are showing... "GASP! Scandalous" haha
However.... that being said.... I TRULY DO LOVE IT.... After looking at all the photos in sewing... I opened YOURS!!!
