Chinese caligraphers brush pot, deeply carved (1 ½”) zitan depicting the three Star Gods seated at a table and drinking wine. 8” tall with a 6” diameter, the pot proper being 4” deep. No markings or signature, age is undetermined. Photos lightened to show detail.

    hi Jim. this is very similar to the older of the two carvings i picked up yesterday. i looked up zitan and rosewood and i think that the older one of the two is made from zitan. it has a purplish cast which doesn't show in the photos. it's very large and heavy. the other one isn't rosewood, and is even heavier so i don't know what that one is made from. thank you for reminding me of this beautiful brushpot!
