This is a Waterbury Series C Rotary Longwind Watch in a Waterbury Watch Co. box with a photo of the factory on the back.
This particular watch has the back embossed with the bust of Horace Greeley and engraved, THE HORACE GREELEY WATCH (above the bust) and TRIBUNE FOUNDED 1841 (below bust).
Horace Greeley, born Feb. 3, 1811 in Amherst H.H. and died Nov. 29, 1872 in New York City.
He began his career as a printer's apprentice in East Poultney, Vt. and then moved to New York and became the senior editor for a new literary magazine, The New Yorker in 1834. In 1841 he founded the newspaper, The New York Tribune and edited until his death.
He was a newspaper editor who is known especially for his articulation of the North's vigorous anti-slavery sentiments during the 1850's. In 1854 he helped organize the Republican Party. Becoming disgrunted with the first administration of President Ulysses S. Grant (1869-1873) he joined a group of Republican dissenters, forming the Liberal Republican Party who opposed Grant. The party nominated Greeley for their presidential candidate. He was an unsuccessful presidential candidate of the Liberal Republican Party in 1872.
Evidently, he died shortly after his run for President.
