Red Ryder on his horse Beaver
Dial is worn and does not seem to be set correctly. I think someone put this over another dial.
The original one was a swiss made watch around 1949 I believe.
Under the 5 is N.Y.

I'm thinking you right about the movement being changed. The original did not have a second hand and the hour and minute hands are not correct either. Does the watch case have solid lugs or this one have spring pins? The original would be 1951.

This case has solid lugs. Made up watch I'm sure.

The original had solid lugs and the case does look correct, I'd bet someone has traded out he movement, for what reason, I'm not sure. Some people do strange things, lol. If you post a picture of the movement, we might determine if the traded up or just Frankenwatched it for a sale.

Movement is marked: World Wide Watch Co. Inc.
Underneath is: ZZ Swiss (reversed & upside down)
    One Jewel

Before I climb out on this limb, LOL, How long have you had this watch, I know that several (50 or so) were dumped on the market around 2006-07 as the real deal.

Dave, Just a little quirk of mine, would you edit the title for me, "Red Ryder"
  7. pw-collector pw-collector, 2 years ago
Sorry about, Eyes are shot. Title is changed.
I have had this since the early 80's.
  8. kerry10456 kerry10456, 2 years ago
Not important (title), just something didn't look right and then it dawned on me. I know about "older" eyes, that and everything else on me is about wore out.
The movement is different than my "Rexall" Bugs Bunny ( these and the Bugs were made by the same mfg for Rexall Drug stores). I sent email to another Character watch collector to ask about his movement also, will get verification and let you know.

Dave, I just found something that will interest you. If it appears like the dial is atop another, like you mentioned, that would be correct. I found in one of my reference books, that these were "thrown" together using the Bugs Bunny watch with this dial glued on top. It also said, if you look at the center of the dial, you can see the "green" of the leaves through the hole. Had that book forever and just now seen that in there.

Thats great Kerry. Looks like it might be legit. When I get back home I will check it out.

Dave, have you checked whether you can see 'green bush' in the center? If the dial is legit, you can swap it with a Bugs Bunny watch in which you can pick up quite cheaply on eBay. A 51 Red Rider is very very rare.

I have not removed the hands to check and the hole is not visible with the hands in place.
  15. pw-collector pw-collector, 11 months ago
Photo added with hands removed & I cannot see green around the hole.

Hy Brown's book (Timepieces) say only 'some' of the Red Rider watch dials were placed on top of unsold Bugs Bunny watches, not all! In any case, I tried compare your watch dial to a colour picture in the book and the graphics on your watch is not really as sharp but perhaps due to age. I think we need to get hold of an original Red Rider in order to make a proper comparison.

George, thanks for that information. I don't even have a book that mentions a Red Ryder watch. I will have to locate a copy of Hy Brown's book.

Another draw back Dave, the case is wrong, that might be why it's hard to wind-set. should be a solid lug, not spring bars. Would probably work correctly in the right case.

Late to the discussion again! Better late then never I suppose. As many have said, this watch is a fantasy piece.

I just wanted to mention that the original Ryder watches were not in a solid lug case. They took spring bars and also had the red second hand.
