This doll was under some dishes in a box that came from an estate auction. I beleive that this may be an ella smith doll "Alabama Indestructible Doll". Maybe from the late 1800's.

Nice find ! It is not a Alabama doll as they had cloth painted faces and not felt bodies . This doll is a Whistler and several companies made boys named example Whister dan and Whistler Jim ect . His face is either a light weight composition or Paper mache ? I wish I could feel it and the weight of it . Very Unique Doll and has all appearances of being made in Germany most likely 1900-1920. I need more info to ID him . How tall is he ? Because we don't want to disturb his original clothes body can't be shown , but do arms move and legs ? is his whole body made of felt ? I will await your reply :-) Love him and he was an excellent surprise for you . Very collectible .

He is a novelty doll from 1920-30 I also asked a second opinion on him . Nice doll

He is exactly 9 3/4 inches long. He is also stuffed with straw and has a round wooden box like object that sits in the chest area. I would have never of thought that it came from greece due to the fact that he is dressed very patriotic. Thanks for all the great information that you can share with me.

I meant Germany not Greece. He's legs and arms do move to a certain point due to the fact that they are stuffed with straw. Thank you!!!!!!!!

Other countries did make dolls that they intended to export to USA and yes they would dress in patriotic clothes . They were also sold to tourists . He is wonderful but exact maker will be difficult to name . Did you check his clothes for any tags also look at back of his neck for a mark . It maybe that it was marked in middle of back but we won't know that . The box you feel is a crier . So when it worked if you squeezed it made a sound .

I will look and see if there are any markings or intials. Thank you for the update.

It most likely made a whistle sound when squeezed since his mouth is that of someone whistling :-)

Where could I go to get this doll appraised? Thank you.

I am not sure where you are but we have doll and antique appraisals several times a year that my friend does the dolls at . Look in you local newspaper for antique shows in area and watch for one that says free doll appraisals . We recently did one at our local TV station even to raise money for network it had a antique show and free appraisals .Be careful of just taking to a antique store as most of the time they are wrong . It needs to be a place that the person is expert in dolls and has a reputable status . Also check or google UFDC to see if they have a chapter in your area .Just some idea's for you :-)
