Tony's Gramma left Germany for Nebraska in 1916 at age 17. I wish I knew more of her journey. I wonder if she bought this on her way here. This looks to be black glass jet and I contacted the Whitby museum in UK but didn't get an answer. Red cameo must be glass and back is metal w/c clasp. It doesn't matter if it's just a tourist piece of **** but I would love to know if a teenage girl treated herself to this simple cameo and where she might have bought it.

This looks like a mourning(widows) jewelry piece, being made of carved semi-precious jet or obsidian, the red bust is most likely coral. An excellent resource site for cameos is called Pommreaie Antiques. This most likely dates late victorian era. It's beautiful & I wish it was mine.

Thank you for your expertise and the resource site. If it's Victorian maybe her Mother gave it to her...so many questions and why I love old jewels.

It's hard to tell for sure from these photos what the materials are. You say the back is metal - I think if it was a (semi)- precious stone, the back would have been left open. It is certainly striking in design and color combo. I would suggest checking if it's glass or plastic. One way could be to tap on a piece of jewelry that you know is glass and then tap on this piece and compare the feel and the sound.

I'm sure the red is glass. The black base is one carved piece - glass or jet? Thanks for your expertise - you know about cameos. These pictures aren't great I know.

If the red part is glass, then the background is probably glass, too. The pieces were probably manufactured in separate molds and then glued together.
