How can I tell? It is scratched "Lamont" on the back of open cameo. No markings on the silver metal frame. Large 2-1/4" x 1-75" Back is open w/c clasp. The subject is Aurora heralding the dawn w/her horses and chariot. I LOVE this cameo and I paid $20 for it. I've tried to research it on web and ebay (that's how I found out it was Aurora), but can't find out if it's plastic or not. Yes, I will take it to an antique dealer - but if anyone knows and can help me that would be great.

Thanks! The hot needle didn't soften the cameo at all. Now my next question - why wasn't the silver frame marked and who is Lamont. THANK you so much for telling me how to test a cameo.

If the frame is not marked, it may be some other metal, not silver. However, not all antique silver was hallmarked, so showing it to a jeweler would help to determine that. Lamont was an artist in the late 19th century who did quality shell carved cameos. I've seen one framed in gold, it was a bit more elaborate, though.

Thank you for this information. I tried to research Lamont on the internet but couldn't come up with anything. Thanks for your expertise.

    beautiful cameo.

Almost certainly not a simulant, looks like shell or stone to me. The setting might be silver, doesn't matter if you don't find a mark. Thats a big secret, TONS of gold and silver isn't marked. If its scratched into the shell, Lamont is probably the carver. Look at it under magnification, does it look like a natural material? Or does it look like plastic? You can often tell a natural material just by looking at it, even when you don't know what that material is

Yes - thanks - you're right. Lamont must be the carver - his name is scratched on back of the cameo. I'm pretty sure it is a shell cameo not plastic. As for the metal? some grade of silver.? I agree w/you! I'm looking at it right now as I write to you. Everything about it is beautiful quality. I know this is a special cameo. Thank you for your expertise.

Yeah if its signed its deffinitely shell. And if its shell, its probably sterling

Thank you! I was going to sell it but unfortunately they are hard to sell in the current market, they're not "in." I think I'll add it to my collection!

Hi everyone and thank you for loving this old cameo. I wore it to the "Gems of the Medici" at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana last month which featured amazing old cameos and artifacts from the powerful Italian Medici family 1500's-late 1700's. It didn't get a second look from anyone! - The exhibit was so beautiful. I love museums.

I love museums to but I would have seen your cameo! It's very nice. Jewellry should be worn :-)
