Indian elephant ivory and rendered by indian artisans for the colonial Dutch or Portuguese (Goa coast) in the mid-1600s. Contemplative rendering of Jesus in seated pose with one foot resting upon a human skull, while holding an globe; symbolizing his triumph over death for the world. Holes in hairline region where a crown of thorns or halo was affixed in antiquity, now missing. Drilled hole in underside of this piece suggests it was a decorative ornament for a larger object (e.g., clock, religious relic, etc.). Dimensions: 2.7” (H) x 1.5” (W).
