I was pleased to get this photo frame from Vinnies some months ago. When I got home I gave it a quick rub with a silver cloth and it just glowed! I had not realised until then how clever was the impressed work on the frame and on the edges too. In a way it reminds me of 'trench-art', but the very tiny impressed "EPNS" means that it was a commercial item. Perhaps it's more Arts & Crafts? It still retains the original glass and the A-frame foot works a treat. I suspect British manufacture but it also could be Australian. I'd welcome any suggestions about its origin.
It's 13 cm across or 5 inches.
The image comes from an ad for an exhibition soon on in Melbourne, Australia. It is from Louis David’s "Napoleon Bonaparte, First Consul, crossing the Alps at Great St. Bernard Pass, 20 May 1800 of 1803". It is normally housed at Versailles, musée national du château; but it's here in Australia for the winter.

I have a couple of oils, a couple of Japanese Ukiyo-e prints, Vasarely print, I have those watercolours by the Davidson twins on CW, a collection of gay drains by an Australian artist called Jugga and a gathering pile of things that have caught my eye. Non of it is really serious 'art': my eye is for the decorative pieces. I can't afford the serious stuff!

The Napoleon image is cut from a copy of the Sydney Morning Herald Magazine. This winter in Melbourne ( a thousand kilometres away) there is an exhibition called "Napoleon: Revolution to Empire" It is a panoramic exhibition examining French art, culture and life from the 1770s to the 1820s. Its story runs from the first French voyages of discovery to Australia during the reign of Louis XV to the end of Napoleon's transforming leadership as first Emperor of France.

This image of Napoleon is by Jacques-Louis David. I was just looking for something to put in the frame. Paul reckoned I should have a picture of him in it.
I thought trench art as well! I have a number of oils. I inherited a lot of stuff I haven't posted yet. OzMarty will be thrilled. I prefer oils. I have a lot. Some are in storage, I will see what I can do for postings.

We left the pounds, shillings and pence in 1966.
No Euros; dollars and cents.
We also got rid of miles, yards, pounds weight and ounces. It's mls, kilos, litres, kilometres.
Everything is metric. Kids know nothing about 'imperial measures'.
Oldies like me still use the old terms for very short distances, heights and personal weights.
It seems Napoleon had doubts about metrification too!

We're planning on going down. These blockbuster exhibitions can be a bit too big, too many people and I'm rethinking it. The last one we saw at the NGV was amazing: Hoffmann, Egon Schiele, Adolf Loos, Gustav Klimt. It was based around a collection that came from Vienna to Australia.

Time slots do make it reasonable; they're used well here and I had a great time at the Vienna event. Tim Bonahady did a great book called Good Living Street: Portrait of a Patron Family, Vienna 1900. His grandmother was a member of the Gallia family that had fled the Nazis and came to Australia here in Sydney with some of their furniture: some by Hoffmann and some by Loos. The portrait of Hermine Gallia painted by Klimt returned to Australia for the occasion with other amazing stuff. It had been bought from the family by the National Gallery in London where it is normally found.

What a beautiful and unusual piece. I wonder what the stylistic persuasion was at the time that it was made. Such a curious design,....it's as though it was modified by the design post production,( the back says otherwise, but it's a thought ).
Lends divinity to David's Bonaparte,.....maybe the portrait of you as a boy would be nice:)
