Bamboo pillow, 16” x 4 ½” x 5 ¾” . Clever and complex design provides for two comfort levels, 2 ½” and 4 ¾”, with a suspension and blade system for flexibility. Such pillows are usually found made of porcelain. All in all, a remarkable piece of engineering. Age undetermined, vintage for sure, probably antique, any input much appreciated.

very interesting - never seen a hard surface pillow: was this made for sleeping on or something else?
Hi Hunter, thanks for your comment. This was made for sleeping and variations still are. If you Google 'Chinese bamboo pillow' you can find modern versions for sale now. As I said, the antiques are made of porcelain, this is the first bamboo I've seen. Check Ebay, and here are a couple of porcelains:

neato - thanks for the info Jim!
the porcelain ones look so uncomfortable. Were they covered with fabric or something to prevent neck pain?
I don't think so. Some were reputedly used in opium dens and if that was really the case, I guess the users didn't notice any back pain, I don't have any idea what people who slept on their side or stomach were supposed to do.
Hi I added 2 more photos of ladle, do you think it is ceramic? toracat
