packrat-pl…

I thought I would post several more of my metal detector finds here today. Nothing special, kinda fond of the lead soldier, Buick pin, and that odd key looking thing on the right.
What about that great lead turkey:) :)
enjoy

Guess that metal detector already paid for itself several times over. How far down in the ground does it detect?
  2. mrmajestic1 mrmajestic1, 12 months ago
    Great stuff!

Thank you very much walksoftly, mustangtony & mrmajestic1. Depending on soil type and condition, target size, and coil size, I can get up to 24" with this detector. All the things you see here were dug shallow, six inches or less.

packrat-place, Im gonna have to get you to tell me your secret about metal detecting! Im lucky to find a penny or two. I usually dig up tin cans or something of less value :)
  10. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 12 months ago
i love how they look displayed together - random lost metal things from settler times through modern times.

What do you mean, "nothing special"? That looks great! The way you lay things out reminds me of shadowboxes with a collection of items inside. Very nice stuff and great pictures.

That odd key looking thing on the right... I'm thinking it is a tool of some sort. I just hope it isn't a tool for a dentist.

Thank you very much for the kind words mizjane, miKKoChristmas11, eye4beauty, Juanpacotaco, Earthling_, ho2cultcha, musikchoo, mizjane & DJSundrop. I am very glad I can get people interested. I have been doing this for around 40 years, including being past president of a metal detecting club and hunt site researcher for another. There is no "secret", it takes research and persistance. My email address is in my "about me" section, feel free contact me, and I will try to steer you in the right direction.
Again, thank you all for the kind words.

Thank you very much for the kind words jimborasco, bratjdd & mizjane. As to the swan, I do not think so, as it is not solid. As to the Buick item, it is not broken anywhere, I believe it dates from the 40's, not really sure what its purpose was.

What is a good metal detector brand, I have been wanting to get into this. I have a lot of property and can't wait to get started plus all the lakes are dried up and I know there has to be a lot of lost treasures on the lake bed.

Thanks for the info AR8Jason, I thought there methods were a little sloppy myself the way they swing that metal detector around like that and I cringe everytime they dig in the ground I think they are just real excited LOL.

AR8JASON is absolutely correct in his above statements, I have little use for any of those reality shows, American Diggers, American Pickers, Storage Wars, etc, they are not the real world.
I use a Tesoro Cortes (http://www.tesoro.com/). It has proven to be a great detector, with dual notch filters, wide and narrow. I also use a pair of Killer Bee headphones(http://thrpro.com/).
I have had quite a few metal detectors over the years and find this one to be excellent. I do not abuse my equipment, however, I do use it hard, and this one has stood up to everything I have thrown at it.
    Hope this helps

The turkey and soldier are so cool! Thanks for posting this - fun to look at. Great swan pin too. I have a similar one - someone cried when she lost that. When I was 5 (oh boy, here it comes) I found an old pre-electric flat iron (duh, called a flat iron!) in our grove under some leaves and dirt, etc. I showed it to my mom who said "I can remember the day your grandmother got her first electric iron. She went out to the back steps and threw this as hard and far as she could." THAT might have been the day I fell in love w/junk and their stories.

I can't help it I love American Pickers. I know it's not as easy as they show it....Maybe I enjoy because I'm also from Iowa. Okay, I've spent many years trying to downplay that... I love how excited Mike gets and I'm sad he's too young for me...
