This carte de visite image dates from the end of the Civil War. The revenue tax stamp is hand cancelled with April of 1865 date.

The image was photographed by Gross out of St. Louis Missouri.

I am not certain of the occupations shown-- it may be several different occupations among a group of workers who worked on the same project. From left to right: 1st man carries a hammer in one hand and a large chisel in the other, 2nd man rests a large wrench on the photographers table, the seated man holds a small object in his hand that I cannot identify, the man on the right holds a file in his hands. The men have a great look to them with all wearing hats and two with pipes.

Reproduction of this image in any form is not authorized.

Thanks for looking Chris. The good occupationals are far harder to find than Civil War soldier images, but don't seem to command the same interest or price levels.

They look kind of like an Italian crew which built fountains - which would explain the sculptor and plumbing tools. just a guess...
