Greatsnowy…
(135 items)
on Thursday May 29th 1434 there was great unrest. People took to their bunks and ate their dinners made of grass and straw cold. On the Friday following that there was bloodshed. On the Saturday there was rejoicing that the Friday was over.
For those who were there with me you'll understand why this turned out to be such a great reminder of the trip. It turns out this is a Marbled glass version of the memorial of that battle all those years ago that I believe originally formed the czech republic freeing them from some sort of warlord or another. There are photos of the original stone monument online.
This little glass piece is dated 1434-1934 Lipany. It's marked up all over the place with other things and I am not sure what it all means or who made it but when I figured out it was a memorial to a great czech battle I had to laugh. I wonder if that battle was one we listened to on the bus (I wasn't paying attention)
For those that weren't there, this was a fun story as to how I got this piece too. We were in Jablonec at the museum that has a ton of Reidel glass and beads and buttons and other jewelry. I am particularly interested in Reidel these days and wanted to be sure to get all of it. Everyone left for lunch after only being there a few minutes so I was all WTF? really? I didn't realize everyone planned on coming back after lunch. All I heard was meet back down in the main foyer at 3:30.
So I decided to stick around there and photograph everything before getting food. It took about half an hour. Then I got something very fast to eat and had another two hours to kill.
So I did what I normally do in a strange city. I wandered around looking for 1. water. 2. antique stores. I wandered and wandered. It felt like I had experienced the Monday, Tuesday AND Wednesday of wandering. I found a liquor store and thought about buying a bottle of something to share around the proverbial campfire that night but decided to wait a little while and do some more wandering first and that was to good measure because it turns out I would need all my cash. Around the next corner was a very nasty looking antique store (the best kind) It was full of new old stock and other great jewelry. No prices but the ones he quoted were freaking DIRT cheap. So I cleaned him out of a lot of good stuff. I spent about 150 dollars that first round. Then I went back looking for people and we came back. and I spent another 50-100 dollars. then for some reason there was a third leaving and coming back to the store.
(I think it goes like this, on the Saturday I came to the store. It was Stinky but the prices were good. I left and came back with my villagers on the Sunday. We feasted and were merry. Then on the Sunday evening we brought the army and laid waste to the merry stinky village and rejoiced.)
Anyway, the shop owner was so thrilled with the business I had given him he gave me a bracelet and this little tower when I asked about them. (I was trying not to buy anything else and just hanging out in the door way but every now and again something new would catch my eye and I'd ask him about it. )
I Have no idea how to research this little tower as to who made it.. I have a feeling it's going to be an obscure thing.
