Sorry for the crappy Iphone shots. I bought this when i was 18 - many years ago. I'd rather hear what people have to say about it before commenting.

the carving is soapstone. The base is Plaster which appears to have been died or painted in some way.
A most interesting piece. I don't know what to say about it! I think that it's fascinating. I look forward to hearing what some of the others more knowledgeable than I have to say about it. Regards, miKKo
i purchased this when i was 18 from a shady antiques dealer from ipswich mass. i wrote to the experts at the philadelphia museum of art who were anxious for me to bring it down for them to look at. i have been a huge fan of duchamp since learning about him in a 10 grade art history class. i drove all the way to philadelphia where i was met by the director - Anne D'Harnnoncourt and the very famous Pontus Hulten - who had just flown in from switzerland. i had read everything i could find about duchamp's early life and i tried to make a correction to a comment Pontus had made, which made him mad. they didn't even invite me to dinner after driving 20 hrs to show this to them. i think that they thought i had made it myself to try and fool the old pros to make some $$. eventually, i was told that Teenie Duchamp was shown photos of it, and that she said that he had never mentioned such a piece to her. there's more, but whatever... ? it was an interesting experience for an 18 yr old country bumpkin like me. the best thing to come from the whole experience was that it sparked something in me to open my eyes to the super-duper-fabulosity of the most mundane things, and to keep a sense of humor about the whole thing. i think duchamp would be happy to hear that.
Did I ever tell you about my "Jacques Villon" abstract gouache/watercolour? I bought it in 1981. I'm still reluctant to show it to anyone.
please share your jacques villon story! my duchamp experience took place in 1984, so it seems you've been holding back even longer! hmmm....
