Does anyone know what the purpose of these ingots would be. I picked these up at a flea market for, I think, $5.00. Many years ago when silver was inexpensive. Of course, it is almost the image of a buffalo nickel. Hopefully i'm not harboring a counterfeiting item. :-( But what dummy would counterfeit nickels? Jimbo

I would say it is odd that I see no mark and that the reverse is pretty crude on the left side. I won't reply to your closing question because they always find a buyer.

PS: These WERE actually produced in large numbers. HOWEVER they are .999 CLAD not pure.

They were produced in large numbers for what reason?
  4. fhrjr2 fhrjr2, 12 months ago
They were advertised as an item you need to collect because the value would go up. Just like the gold clad ones on TV right now. There is a new rectangular version of the one you show here. I believe it is advertised as being 1 full oz. and it is marked .999, sells right now for $7.95 on sites like Amazon. The people selling them aren't telling a lie, they just don't explain the truth. These are .999 but only the outer skin, the core is a base metal. Melt value of silver today closed at $26.96 an oz. so the 1 oz indian head for $7.95 should tell the story.

They made them in large numbers but i can't find any like them anywhere on the internet. There should be some record of them. At least someone selling a set.

Thanks for the information fhrjr2-- these "clad" silver pieces are a little dangerous on the secondary market with recent silver prices.

How does google images ID as clad vs. solid silver?

Scott, Google images doesn't do anything but get you the image if it finds it. If you click the image you are transported to the site that hosts the image. Once on the host site you find information and links to other sites for researching more.

Crooks will counterfit anything for profit. Coin dealer told me 50d nickles were counterfitted resulting in a decline in value of the orignals

Value be dammed.. They have value to me!!
  17. jimborasco jimborasco, 12 months ago
There seems to be confusion between value....and worth. Worth is monetary, value is what they mean to you.

    You are correct Jimbo!!
