This was my Grandmothers Brooch. I am not sure what to call the application. I think it is an Onyx Crystal and the Gold Rose is carved or etched inside. I forget if it's 22 or 24 kt. Gold. I am also not sure if it's called Gilt or Vermeil. I posted it many months ago thinking it was Reverse Intaglio but am not sure?? Thanks for any info.

Beautiful. I wish you luck solving this!
it certainly looks like intaglio to me, the way the rose is carved in reverse - not sure if it was simply decorative or used for a specific impression purpose though...
After reading about Intaglio Art I am convinced this Brooch is Intaglio. I also read about Reverse Intaglio and find I have a pendant that is Reverse Intaglio. I also have a frosted cut out pendant. I will post a picture of all 3 together. Thanks to you both for your response.
This carving goes down into the the Black Onyx Crystal and then is painted in Gold. I just read about Reverse Intaglio, where the image is usually carved or etched in the back of something like clear Lucite and then it's painted or not. So yes this is definetly Intaglio.
