Traditional Japanese tobacco pipe. Its got the jungin mark, which means 'pure silver,' and I was told that it was Meiji-era by the person who bought it, late 1800's. What do you guys think of it?

Neat pipe and I don't think it was for tobacco, but opium

Hey Kerry, I'm with you, that is way too small for tobacco.....definitely opium. Very nice pipe! TG

I thought it was opium too, at first, but I did a lot of research and its deffinitely for tobacco. It even smells of tobacco, had some burnt leaves in it.

      Yep, definitely tobacco.

Thanks! And nope, it was just sitting on a table at a garage sale for $5. I sold it pretty quickly, obviously for quite a bit more than I paid. It got a TON of watchers, REALLY quickly, lots of PM inquiries.

An elegant pipe, I love the engaved flowers. Are they iris? Shoubu is symbolic of heroism! Manly virtues.

You're right, the flowers certainly do look like irises, and they probably are. They're what is called a mon, or a family crest, like a shield-of-arms in Japan. Lots of them are birds and leaves and flowers and stuff like that
