Thanks to Brian Severn for solving this mystery for me!

I picked up this piece on eBay a couple of years ago - the purple shaded bottom and art nouveau scrollwork attracted me to it. A piece in this exact shape was found in an early Harrach sales catalogue. Sometimes (or rather, often) you choose a piece for its quality, and the attribution comes later! Thanks, Brian!

The gold threaded enamel work and purple-to-clear glass reminds me a bit of the unknown Novy Bor type vase I just sold recently (see here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/221056671065?). Sadly, I had no clue about that piece either.

The bottom to top purple to clear suggests Harrach, no? The other way round is Moser? Anyway that whip-lash gilding is beautiful! Wonderful piece!

That top to bottom/bottom to top thing is a myth... I think the shape is all wrong for Moser - I would believe Harrach if there were evidence to support it - but I haven't seen any so far.

I'd love to know who perpetrated that Moser/Harrach color shading myth?

Warren would you believe me if I told you I had a Harrach sales catalog photo showing the identical shape?

Not only would I believe you, Brian, I would love to see it!!!

eh, It's not always true but I do think Harrach usually was the maker behind the color on the bottom. it seems that way.

I mean, there is always an exception to the rule. color on the top could be a ton of people but I am not sure I've ever seen a piece that wasn't harrach with color on the bottom.

For me the dead giveaway is the shade of purple and the way it graduates to clear - I've never seen this on anything other than a Harrach Blank.

I agree with your statement, Warren. You just have to go with your gut feeling. Many times I just liked the piece, bought it first and was ( or wasn't ) able to attribute later. But if you see something you like, just get it and worry about what it is later. It could be just one of the kind you will never see again....
