I'm not sure where the best place is to post this.
This is a California Department of Veterans Affairs Challenge Coin, given to me the other day by Major General Roger Brautigan. He entered the U.S. Army in 1969 following his graduation as a Distinguished Military ROTC Graduate.
His military career spanned 33 1/2 years. He is a Vietnam veteran, served in the Pentagon during the first Gulf War, followed by 6 1/2 year tour in Germany. His final assignment prior to retirement in August 2002, was at Fort Lewis Washington and first U.S. Corps Deputy Commanding General.
On May 29, 2009, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed him as the Acting Secretary of the California Department of Veterans Affairs.
The origin of the challenge coin dates back to the Second World War and was first used by the Office of Strategic Service personnel who were deployed in Nazi held France. The coins were simply a local coin used as a "Bona Fides" during a personal meeting to help verify a persons identity. The very first unit in the U.S. Military known to have a coin was the oldest Special Forces Unit in the U.S. Army.
