COMPANY INFO BELOW______________________________

Illums Bolighus - our Story

In 1925 Illums Bolighus was founded under the name BO by the Danish business man Kaj Dessau. Apart from having business flair Kaj Dessau also possessed a great aesthetic sense. Together with Kaj Dessau’s artistic consultant, Brita Drewsen, he created a concept, which up to that time had never been seen anywhere in the world. A store comprising designed interiors, where textiles and furniture formed a synthesis with art. Drewsen´s and Dessau´s unusual vision and sense of quality up through the 1930es has since then had an immense impact on the international status gained by Danish interior design.

In 1941, subsequently to the business take over by the families Illum, Berg and Trock-Jansen, the owners of the department store A.C. Illum A/S, the store was renamed Illums Bolighus A/S. In 1961 Architect M.A.A. Kay Kørbing designed the present building, which by its understated extravagance appears to be an extremely stylish and classical building in the middle of the busy Amagertorv. Illums Bolighus is no longer connected to the department store Illum.

In 1997 Illums Bolighus was appointed Purveyor to the Royal Danish Court.

From 1 October 2005 the owners of Illums Bolighus comprise an investor group, headed by the Managing Director, Henrik Ypkendanz. The store has experienced a positive development in turnover and profitability since he took up the job as Managing Director in 2001.

The trendsetting and visionary window displays at Illums Bolighus have always been characteristic for the store, which - since the opening in 1925 - has followed the trend of the society. The basic idea is shown in the store through an attractive and inspiring purchasing environment, always ahead of trends. If possible, an idea even more sustainable and relevant today than previously.

In addition to the store in Amagertorv, Illums Bolighus also owns three shops in Copenhagen Airport and a shop in Tivoli Gardens. During autumn 2006 the first foreign Illums Bolighus opened in House of Oslo in Oslo (Norway). Here the sales area of 2500 m2 distributed on three floors will also be the flagship store within classical and modern interior design and accessories.

A third second Illums Bolighus shop outside Copenhagen opened in autumn 2008 in Århus in Jutland. More than 3000m2 with the best of Danish and Scandinavian Design awaits you - classics as well as current trends that move and set new limits.

In autumn 2010 Illums Bolighus opened the first Swedish design house in Hamngatan 27 in Stockholm. Inside awaits 2250 m2 distributed on three floors with a selection of today´s most famous design classics and innovative new brands. Although the Swedish Illums Bolighus is smaller than the Danish flagship store at Amagertorv in Copenhagen, it reflercts the Danish shop with design products within lighting, cooking, bathing and wellness.
