Senior Fire Officer WW11 steel helmet. Well used, the two red bands denote his rank, the top decal shows NFS, (National Fire Service). The lower small oval decal which is too worn to make out, would have had a number in it, which denoted which area of Britain he was stationed. To overcome some of the earlier problems the fire service was re-organised into the National Fire Service (NFS) bringing together the 16,000-plus fire brigades within the country. This force came into existence on the 18th August 1941 and all brigade and AFS personnel were transferred into it. The service was responsible, through regions, to the Home Office directly which meant that the chain of command was much simpler and the standardisation of training and equipment could be quickly effected.

Hi, Petey. Thanks for posting these wonderful helmets and their history! They bring the great struggle to life again in a very particular way - one man at a time giving fierce battle against an evil empire intent on extinguishing him, his family, his church, his civilization. One vigilant, anxious, thoroughly exhausted man at a time....A most wonderful collection! Thank you!

If I even presumed to court-martial you, sir, I'd be in hot water with any number of people – many who also look forward to admiring these great helmets, many who also can't think of a comment worthy of the wearer's struggle, so just click 'love it'….Thanks again, miKKo
