This is an 1881 U.S. Three-Cent piece. They were issued from 1865-1889. It is 25% copper and 75% nickel. To quote the "Red Book" which is entitled, "A Guide Book of United States Coins", "Nickel three-cent pieces were issued because their silver counterpart was hoarded by the public." This coin not only has a different design and composition but it is larger, measuring 17.9mm in diameter which is the same as our dime.
Thank you for your patience with my long-winded descriptions! I am no expert on this subject but merely a lover of the artistry and history of our early money.
