I had decided in the early days of July to make Car Mascots or Car Hood Ornaments my new collectible. I was lucky to be in contact with the worlds top collector who regularly sells the most high priced and exclusive mascots, through Bonhams in England, and he has been giving me a lot of really good information, in 7 or 8 e-mails thus far. So I was able to bid in the Artcurial | Briest - Poulain - F. Tajan Auction House's July 7 car auction, in Paris, France, where I secured these pieces. Apparently I should concentrate on pre-war car mascots, like these two examples. Right now I do not believe I will collect lalique mascots as they vary so wildly, and so do the prices. I do not want a sub-standard Lalique. Unfortunately I also want some of the rather rare kitch fun ones also. So I do hope I can keep finding exceptional pieces. Also hope I can take some better quality photos next time. ( Photos were basically redone late July early August )

Auction house in Paris at their Car auction this month. I just got it by Fed-ex July 30th.
Sasportas Batman. This is an exceptionally rare 1920's mascot depicting a flying nude man with bat wings, in purest Art Deco style. Silver plated bronze, signed to base, with foundry stamp behind right wing. Edit. Sasportas was one of the foremost producers of only the very finest mascots in France. They specialised in Art Deco creations, and the name is synonymous with great style and creativity. Described in Michel Legrand book 'Mascottes Passion' Plate 276.
Dimensions : 105mm high, 180mm wingspan.
Condition : Absolutely first class, a totally 100% 1920 original with superb age patination, showing the gentle passing of time. There is absolutely no restoration or replating on this magnificent piece whatsoever, there is some loss to the silver plating but that came with time. A beautiful piece on the stand which shows just a little wood worm, but it is from 1920 also most probably.
The Speed Goddess or L'Exotique By Ruffony is a rare smiling mascot with good detail. It is in the book " La Folie Des Bouchons De Radiateur " by Dominique Pascal.
L'Exotique, 1930, cast nickel, features smiling young girl's face with flowing headdress and scarf around neck, signed Ruffony, France, (Legrand's book #250), mounted on black Bakelite screw-on cap, mascot
3.75" high, A- cond., (light surface wear and scratches). The photographs of L'Exotique were taken and added August 3, 2011.

I am surprised how far I got into it. All you have to do is get some books, and then your interest will go tenfold. It just sort of blew up in my face, so many highs in the last month and a half, I stopped counting. I was extremely passionate when just starting out and it seems the same now. Another thing that is astonishing , how much information I have taken in the last 6 weeks and most of it I can remember, thats when you know you are hooked !~
How did I miss this? Batman is unbelievable!! You don't kid around when you start a new collection. Just dive into the deep end. I love it!
Thats why research is very important, to have a good collection you need some key pieces that are rare, then you use your taste to move your collection in the right direction. The batman is one of the best designs, and the art deco of mascots really is not touched on in the Art Deco books which is a big oversight since it involved some of the top artists of the period, for instance, M. GUIRAUD-RIVIERE, F.Bazin, even Brandt the genius of iron.
Not to mention Lalique !!
