I have always been drawn these pieces with metal collars formerly identified as Stölzle. However what is off-putting about them is that the collars are often grungy.

Yesterday, at an antique show, I found this 5.5” piece (first shot) with a metal collar. The glass was filthy and the collar was black with grunge. For twenty bucks – I got inspired to clean all of the collars on my pieces. With dremel in hand and a polishing compound, I removed most of the dirt on all of the collars (group shot) that had built up over the years.

I am not sure what the original colour was of these collars or for that matter what they are made from. In the second shot, I had the collar made from silver.

I won't retell here how I was misled into calling them Stolzle based on one picture in the Spiegel/Pazaurek book. In terms of the collars, they are unmarked, of a very cheap metal indeed. However, they have survived quite well. I am fairly sure they were cold painted polychrome at one point. I will have n access to my photo archive until the end of the month, but I can show at least one example.
