can someone tell me how to tell if this gorgeous painting i inherited is valuable or just a copy. I know it is "Sonato" by the artist M. Ditlef. It is signed. The frame is magnificent and both are in good condition. This painting hung over my mother-in-law's mantle (she's 95) and it was given to her by an old lady who lived down the street from her. It hung in one of the historic homes in our town.
thanks, Kaye

Hi kaye! This work is very pretty. Is it possible for you to post some different photos that would show the frame, signature, back and perhaps any other information about this, such as it's size? Is it on canvas or paper? Is it a painting or a print? All these things would be important for someone to be able to help you. Thanks for sharing it. :-)
thanks for replying. it is signed 'm. ditlef'. i will have to measure it but it appears to be 36 x 30. without taking the back off and examining the painting, it appears to be an oil painting. it's under glass so I cannot be sure. i will take it to a local art dealer in town to look at it. i'm afraid i might damage it if I try to take the back off myself. i will take some pictures of the beautiful gold frame. BTW, what part of southwest virginia are you in. my family if from Grayson, Smyth and Wythe Counties. take care.
I can understand not wanting to take the backing off yourself. I know it's lovely, no matter what you discover about it, that won't change. :-) Have you googled the artist/title? I saw quite a few from this artist, all with the same central theme and all beautiful! I had never seen the 'series' before.
I'm just north of Wythe, and about 2 miles east of the Smyth county line. If you know the area, you know I mean it when I say I'm in the middle of nowhere! *LOL* My maternal grandmother came from Washington county, Meadowview to be exact and my father's parents just west of Giles! Small world. :-)
It is a beautiful painting, so the mirror behing my sofa is coming down and this is going up. Pulaski or Bland? anywhere near there?
Hi again, kaye. I can see why you want it somewhere you can see it often! :-) Pulaski is well over an hour away. We're west of Bland, toward Saltville.
