A forgotten American artist/designer: Lucienne Bloch?
A Leerdam connection to the US?
There are more than one, for sure!
At this month's Collector’s Fair I found two pieces of clear glass.
One was a piece of Kaj Franck’s ‘rakkolasia' or 'blister glass' from the Sargasso range.
The other was a piece of ‘gesatineerd glas’ frosted glass designed by Lucienne Bloch in 1929 for Leerdam.
The catalogue number of this piece is KO 1457.
It was made by the N.V. Glasfabriek Leerdam for a number of years after 1934.
It is part of the range of “Plastiek” – sculptures that Leerdam has produced. I love the poise of the reclining deer the ‘liggend hertje’ and the look on the face of the "hert".
It is 11 cm or 4.3" long.
Lucienne Bloch January 5, 1909 - March 13, 1999) was a photographer, muralist and multi-talented artist. She was fascinating character, friend of Antoine Bourdelle, Andre Lhote. Beniamino Bufano, Frank Lloyd Wright, Santiago Martínez Delgado, Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo and others…..

Daughter to the great composer Anton Bloch, close friend of Frieda and Diego, worked for the WPA project in the 30's, designed for Leerdam while in her 20's. I even have a first signed edition of her novel!

A bottega is an atelier or a boutique. The veneta refers to the region of the Veneto where the company was formed originally in Vicenza in 1966 by Michele Taddei and Renzo Zengiaro. Cool bag!
