This Gas station belonged to my great uncle in Ashtons SD.This Photo was taken after it closed he passed away in 1949 . It carried our family name . he also had a large Mill on site . Love the old gas pump

Walksoft I guess the door was just open and most likely did sit outside in warm weather . My grandparents took this when they passed through many years ago . I wish we had a photo of how it looked when it was running :-) I think all my relatives live in or lived in ghost towns David ??????

I think anyone over 40 that grew up in rural North America, can name a few ghost towns. With the changes in farm mechanization & transportation every thing changed after WWII. People wanted more for their families & they could find it in the bigger cities.

Walksoft I never saw a abandoned town till until I found out My Canada family and now SD live in one .I am working on cemeteries but have had no luck so far in Conquest .

Mani, you shoud'nt have! for me? LOL , you know i LUV this pict. You can tell grand-pops was just hanging on, not making a killing here. Did someone operate it after he passed? Just thinking thats a 1960-70 (in the style of) a Tokheim Explorer pump on the right, and a (in the style of) a late 40s- 50s Erie pump on the left. Both of them leaning, like me. Do you know what brand he used? Green makes me think Texaco, Cities Service? And, did it have a small service bay attached on the back? NO MATTER WHAT, THATS A CLASSIC IMAGE MANI, WELL DONE!!!
Mikie this was on my Grandfathers side of family he rarely talked about . I never saw the building when it was operating or a photo . Only this one after it was closed . I believe his son took over business though and most likely updated it . I so little info on that branch of family . I do see his name when I search Ashton and his son was born there and I would say Son may have owned it or ran it after he passed . I am working from the notes left on back of photo's . Glad you liked it . I agree one pump is newer :-)

Love the picture!!! I think pic was taken in the early '80's...the Ford Aerostar mini-van in the back-gound kinda dates the pic. I LOVE old America buildings and forgotten towns/buildings!! Thanks Manikin!!!
beachcomb I think you might be right . The writing on back could be my Moms writing which means that she may have stopped there on way to Canada Sask . They did have a van then also . You might have caught what I missed . I think they went there in about 1984 to see my family by Van to bring some things back . Her and her Mother write a like :-) Thanks for pointing that out .
