Vintage Old Knife in Hand carved case Found 1950 in Desert in Nevada. My husband found this many years ago. It is as sharp as a razor . Blade measures 11Inches total length with handle 16 inches . It is wrapped in a rope type weave and in a carved out case that looks like it would strap on to a belt maybe . No idea if this is Indian or what it is . It is very interesting piece . The knife slips into a depressed area in case that is hand chiseled out . Any Idea's to you knife people . I would think it was for hunting as it could cut your hand off in a second . I am afraid if it to touch it to sharp .
I can not find a category for vintage knives ? I am thinking this is mid to late 1800's or first of 1900's ?

Hinalung is a head hunters spearpoint machete. The heavy double edged blade is designed to be socketed as a spear or used as a hand blade machete. It is hand forged from spring steel by the Ifugao people (sometimes US army jeep high quality leaf spring suspension steel). Superior quality, the handle is made from the same steel like the blade and therefore virtually unbreakable! For better handling it is covered with Rattan weaving.
Ifugao is a region in the northern part of Luzon Island in the Philippines. It is a very mountainous and remote region that has some of the most amazing rice terraces - a UNESCO heritage site - of the world.
The Ifugao are originally warriors, who formerly even engaged in head hunting. They live in tribes and especially in the remote mountain villages they still live a life like hundreds of years ago. Some old people still have tattoos documenting their successful head hunting. Even today venturing too far into the remote mountains of the Philippines can be dangerous, since some tribes are hostile to strangers protecting their villages with deadly traps. The Ifugao are well known of their believes and the great primitive artworks that they are producing.

I know it cuts admetal . I didn't take it all the way out for fear I might get hurt . I am intrigued by it . I wish it could tell me something too Admetal . Hoping to try and place it in a tribe or maybe a very talented knife maker the twine or weaved rope handle and on case is so well done . Wonder who lost it , was it in middle of no place in desert just sage brush and the knife .

Most people go out in the desert and find there thirsty, or a rattlesnake, some people have all the luck! Tell him "he dun good" Mani. Thought about what you had said, & you were right (of coarse) , besides, if i left, who would terrorize your dolls?? Wonder if that blade used to be a file? Dad used to make knifes out of those quite often, (back in the day).
Hi it's my guy Mikie and glad you know how much we would miss you :-)))) I rather doubt it was a file Mikie it is very wide as well as big and pretty flat but anything is possible . I am going to take a better photo outside if I can bear the heat . This knife looks and feels like it was meant for serious business . Your afraid of my monkey and dolls will this knife was trying it's best to cut me ! Never got bit by any of my dolls. manikins or animals . It was a danger for them to full it from it's case but I am sure they did one day and it was not for playing . Maybe a buffalo or something . So glad to see you !

Like the Movie with the young Mt guy that goes to revenge the killing of his family by Indians and when he did met the Indian that killed his family he couldn't kill him. Darn I can't remember name of movie . A Ole Mt Man was in it also and they met on the Mt from time to time . See my mind travels too LOL

Kevin I would not be surprised by size of blade . The handle and case have a lot of age . Does it look to you like a homemade blade ? I know the case is . Possible that it is native american ? Thanks bunches for looking at it I appreciate it .

I think it's called a double-edged dagger, sheath or boot knife. it's an attack knife.
I'd call it an intimidation knife, reminds me of a scene from "Crocodile Dundee II" lol

Walksoft you have to much time to watch TV LOL It was Jerimah Johnsons :-) He lived at time in movie I could see this used . It is maybe a one of a kind ? I have no clue . You can cut your finger off removing it from case . The case would have had to be tied to body and not in a critical location . like a part you might need :-)
Do you remember the scene when a guy pulls a knife on Crocodile Dundee, & then he pulls his huge knife out & the other guy runs away intimidated & scared;-)
Manikin, my guess for the material used for twining would be what ever was around (bushes or plants) when and where the knife was made. They are cut, dried and split and then twined or braided for use. You say it was found in the desert but it could have been made somewhere else and then brought with someone to where it was dropped. Makes you wonder why it was dropped and not taken, you know?

Honestly, Mani... I think this really needs to be identified and appraised by someone well versed in Western history and antiques. There are a couple of museums in California where they might be helpful... one is the Gene Autry Museum of Western History in LA, the other is the Southwest Museum (It used to be called the Southwest Indian Museum), also in LA. Perhaps if you go to their websites, there might be a contact person that can help you, or refer you to an expert. The more I look at your knife/ machete, the more interesting and old it looks. I'd love to know the story!

Manikin, I hope you can find out more about this knife. It is certainly unique and I find the best part of collecting, is finding things that "speak" to you. Then the fun begins for me, I try to research everything to try and find out where the item came from and who possibly made it. The ones that take a long time to find info on I find to be the best as when you finally do get what you are looking for as to provenance, it makes it all the sweeter for taking the time. You have a nice piece there, congrats! :)

This was found just over border of Nevada and CA on other side of Mountain. I will look at those sites and see what I can find out . Thanks again for all the help !

Wow! So how the heck does an old Philippine Igorot dagger end up in the Nevada desert? Maybe we were invaded unaware during WWII! And I was so sure it was an Indian or Mexican knife! That's quite amazing that you had this information at your fingertips! And, Azzer, looks like we share the same name!
If I had to guess how it got here, I would guess a soldier who was in the PI during the war picked it up as a souvenir, brought it back to the US, and lost it in the desert. But that's just a guess! I love to try to figure out the backstory of these mystery items, and if I don't know it, I make it up!
Mani- it would be a good story to know how exactly your husband came to find it in the Nevada desert!

Ok I questioned my husband Stef with a flood light and interrogation to remember exactly where he found it and how . And it came to him clear . This makes mystery even more curious . It was 1960's not 50's . He went 4 wheeling in desert just outside of Yerington Nevada in desert and drove through a mine tunnel . He found it in the mine just laying there . It was a closed down mine . Rather like Packrats photo's that he showed of Nevada mine . Makes a person wonder why it was in there it must have been being used ? The possibility of a soldier bringing it home to USA could be how it got here as Stef brought up.

Thank you Azzar ! The information you have provided help solve a wonder we have had for many years . Do you collect knives or study history of tribal artifacts ? I also saw your link on one for sale they look new so I assume they still make them in same way as many years ago . The Hinalung I have appears fairly old . I know we need to do something about rust but neither of us like to take it out it is so sharp and when pulling it from case it can cut you quick . I sure hope no one ever was hurt by this knife at the hands of head hunters . I will print out your information so I can keep it with the knife (Hinalung) .
