Are you missing some pages in the front of the book? The books first edition was first published in 1850 by Ticknor & Fields, the second edition includes a preface written by Hawthorne dated March 30, 1850. There should be a title page before the contents page.
hi, unfortunately yes there are missing pages its seems in front, shame to its a nice find, someone even allowed a child sqripple on it. i love books, i have lots of them and they're in perfect condition i dont allow anyone let alone a child damage them. i encourage my grandaughter to read and she has respect for them. tks for input hopefully ill find another.
