Every collector has one. That true discovery piece that makes the year, decade or lifetime experience after endless trolling among rubbish bins and dealer booths. Well, this one is mine...
Large Loetz Phänomen Gre 2/450 decor vase in rare pink ("rosalin") ground colored glass, of which only one other example has surfaced based upon current research (see Dorotheum 2010). Fully signed underneath "Loetz Austria" in the polished pontil region. Dimensions: 7"(H) x 6.5"(D).
The Phänomen Gre 2/450 decor, the design of which to my eye most approximates the stalk of a corn plant, when found is typically in a green/yellow color combination. This rare pink/rosalin and blue/green combination is most unusual and really makes the design "pop" regardless of the lighting situation.
A standard green and yellow 2/450 combination vase example can be found in the PMC collection and is written up in Das Boehmische Glas (Band IV) with the following information, "...the separation of threads and bands was performed in which the decor was pre-blown and the body was blown out. This decorative technique was tested on the glass pieces for the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 and for the Viennese Winter Exhibition 1900/1901 (see paragraphs IV.36, IV.41). In 1902, Loetz resorted back to this method and refined it. With different colored variants isolated, twig-like ornaments (of the 2/450 Gre) were decorated in 1902, especially for lampshades (see drawings on the cuts at Lotz 2/490a Prod No. 1989, pp. 336, and Prod Nos. 2/640, 2/655, ibid Vol 2, pp. 143f)."

Wow! That is one for the book. The pink "rosalin" glass really does make the design POP, as you say. What a treasure. Great find; I'll see if I can find #3, but it might take a lifetime.
Not much to say. I was attending a local antiques show and this was the second Loetz piece I found after 7+ years of trolling around at shows in my area. The first piece was a nice Loetz papillon water sprinkler form, not terribly rare but still nice to find in my area. I told the seller I may come back for the sprinkler piece, but decided to walk away and look around the rest of the booths. In the last row, I came upon a booth inhabited by a nice older gentleman and his wife. He was a long-time dealer, who specialized primarily in local ceramics. He told me that this was the last piece of art glass he had, as he had divested himself of a large number of other pieces over the years (sigh!). In any event, after a little bit of haggling the piece was mine. I was trembling all the way home.
Superb.
I love the piece and I eye4 is right, I love the story.
