I found this beautiful little box the other day and i know NOTHING about it. It appears to be silverplated brass. The other box in the third picture came from the same source. That one is made in japan.

i think it's a betel nut box. it could be from one of the hill tribes in thailand. i think i saw them when i lived there many years ago.

it's from Burma / Myanmar - a betelnut or amulet box. it's probably very old and i can't figure out the name of the particular technique, but i can tell it's old because there are some remnants of a latch of some type which wore away a long time ago.

solid silver, but i don't know the content in the silver which is used. they do a lot of work w/ gold as well. this appears to be a very gold-colored silver, not brass.

That first one looks like silver to me, maybe 800, you need to take it to a jeweler to have him file into it, it will make all the difference. Yeah, that doesn't look like plated brass... If you're talking about the inside, thats a separate sheet of metal. It has an Indian/SE Asian look to it.

The second one is pretty far gone, that verdigris means its a copper alloy, probably brass. Not too much value due to the condition I'm afraid.

i agree w/ you stillwater, except i already tested it and it is solid. i used to be a silver/goldsmith many lifetimes ago. i had forgotten how to do that, but looked it up and remembered. the liner of box #1 is also pure silver. box #2 is junk.

      Filigree and Granulation?
    9. Stillwater Stillwater, 12 years ago
Wait, what do you mean by solid? Solid means 'not hollow.'

In the photograph, the liner of the box looks very brassy and I almost think I see verdigris? Is it just the photo? It looks a LOT like brass, and these primitive cultures don't use vermeil very much.

How are you sure its .999 pure silver? The only way to tell that is with an XRF analyzer, acid can't tell the difference between sterling and fine. )At least the bottle I bought can't.)

i meant that it was silver and not mostly alloy or plate. i don't know what the pctg is.
