This is a 15-1/2" x 18-1/2" ink drawing (BASKET DREAM) and poem (WHISPERS OF THE PEOPLE) 1982 by David Javier Ipina a Native Californian. He gave this to my parents and after they passed away, it became mine.
David Ipina had a short life. He was born in Hayward, California on October 26, 1952, to Christina Reed Ipina, a Yurok Indian and Efrain Charles Ipina, a native of Guatemala. He attended Hayward public schools and learned his Yurok heritage from his mother.
When the California Indian magazine, News from Native California did a spread on David Javier Ipina in 1995, it called him, "A native Californian multimedia artist, poet, silversmith and jokester".
Mr. Ipina, 45 collapsed and died July 18, 1998 of an apparent heart attack at Point Reyes National Seashore while hiking with his wife.
He had been attending the area's annual trade festival at Kule Loklo Indian Village.
Mr. Ipina's drawings and silver work were often done on basketry motifs using the patterns of the Yuork basket weavers. "His work was really in the top level of Indian artists, and he was a true artist", said Jennifer Bates of the Tuolumne Miwok Rancheria, an Indian art curator and former gallery owner.
I'm proud to have this great American Indian artwork in my home.
