This is a ninth plate tintype of a Union soldier wearing the typical late war 4 button sack coat. The sack coat is the typical uniform coat found in late war images. The nine button frock is usually found in early war images-- it was a lot less conducive to actual fighting/ combat.
He is also wearing a slouch hat.
