This is my newest one...It's in such wonderful condition, I've done nothing to it yet. It has the shelf box inside, the lock is in great condition, the leather handles are in great condition. There was "history" inside the box too, 1940's newspapers, a handmade silk dress, and some other memorabilia from a lady born in 1920. There's initials on the side "MER". The lock says "Eagle Lock Co Terryville Ct. Pat'd June 13, 1882 - Dec 6, 1892" The only things "wrong" with it is a missing roller on the bottom and although the hinge is there, it's not attached on one end anymore.
I think I really want to keep this one. I plan to get some Linseed oil today and treat it...I love the trunk and the history I found in it. Any other information you know from looking at it would be greatly appreciated, researching the stuff I found inside is proving very exciting....

This one is similar in age style and type as your last one I commented on. I have one similar to this refinished in my collection. Nice well built trunk.

Are those latches above the handles? I do no tthink I have ever seen that before.

Those are actually called "guides" to help the lid stay in place. You often will see them on the front as well. They are usually found on higher quality trunks.
