I have remarked on the Leyendeckers; obsession with the Navy, the Marines and sailors. This posting means to show the contrast between two quite different renderings of the naval experience. Pics. 1,2, are literally stiff, static, almost unrecognizable as JC Leyendecker except for the trademark signature. These two posters emphasize the "harmless" nature of war as "patriotic duty".
And then JC (pic. 3) lets it all hang out in what I would call a homoerotic semiotic buffet exposing the the dark side of all bellicose aggression: weapons of penetration--be they bullets, knives or rockets-- and objects of penetration--always bodies.
Frank (pic. 4) copies his brother (as he often did). The heroic lads
in these depictions are also objects of desire, offering their bodies to the penetrating gaze of the savvy viewer. Total semiotic deconstruction!
