British WW11 cammo painted helmet. This helmet was used by a member of staff stationed at Royal Air Force Silloth, in Cumberland and Westmorland, near Carlisle. Same airfield where a previously posted Nurses helmet was used.
The airfield was originally designed to be used by RAF Maintenance Command but was handed over to Coastal Command during November 1939.
Units which were based there during the war and post war:-
No. 1 Operational Training Unit (OTU) using Avro Ansons, Bristol Beauforts and Bothas.
No. 6 OTU with the Vickers Wellington and Anson.
No. 311 Squadron RAF using the Consolidated B-24 Liberator.
No. 22 Maintenance Unit.
1353 Target Towing Flight using the Supermarine Spitfire and the Vultee A-31 Vengeance.
No. 5 Ferry Pool.
