I believe this piece is slate with inlay colored stone of some kind, does anyone know who might of made this, or something like it? and a time frame as to age, I believe it is one of a kind

Hi Deanteaks. I have a similar item to yours, but with inset butterflies. I believe it (and yours) to have been made in Italy.
Mine is 9.2 cm x 5.7cm. (3.6" x 2.25")
Mine is signed underneath in script "Menegatti" or "Menogatti". 42. a some other numbers that are still illegible to me.
I'll post some pictures soon.
I have also seen English work from the same period that is termed "Ashford Black Marble ".

I believe the English stuff is quite different in its choice of inlaid stone.
The Italian ones seem to have a more colourful choice of stones, to my eye.
I'll take some picture of my paperweight tomorrow and post them.

'fermacarte' is a paperweight.
'mosaico fiorentino' = pietra dura
'di ardesia' is slate
Try the term "commesso fiorentino" as a google search!
This is the Italian term for this technique.
