Very interesting piece, Deanteaks! You find the most interesting things. I have never a piece like this one.

Hi Deanteaks. I have a similar item to yours, but with inset butterflies. I believe it (and yours) to have been made in Italy.
    Mine is 9.2 cm x 5.7cm. (3.6" x 2.25")
Mine is signed underneath in script "Menegatti" or "Menogatti". 42. a some other numbers that are still illegible to me.
    I'll post some pictures soon.
I have also seen English work from the same period that is termed "Ashford Black Marble ".

I believe the English stuff is quite different in its choice of inlaid stone.
The Italian ones seem to have a more colourful choice of stones, to my eye.
I'll take some picture of my paperweight tomorrow and post them.

very nice thank you, do you know what the Italians call it? there is some writing on the back but very faint, I cannot read it

    'fermacarte' is a paperweight.
    'mosaico fiorentino' = pietra dura
    'di ardesia' is slate

Try the term "commesso fiorentino" as a google search!
This is the Italian term for this technique.
Il mosaico commesso fiorentino in pietre dure.

I've just found mention of two brothers: Leopoldo & Alberto Menegatti!

Have a good look at those marks!
