I am trying to get any information you might have about this set. I was given this as a partial down payment on a car in 1974. At that time it was appraised at between $350 and $450 but I do not know if that value is correct. I would like to know how old it is, who made it and what the value is. Thank you for your help. Tom

Hi Tom, this is a turned and carved Indian set. It appears to be a large set, but there is nothing in the photos to give it scale, so I can't tell for sure. Obviously a well made quality set. It would be helpful to provide the height of at least the kings and pawns. Prices for chess sets are very difficult to find, none of the books on collectible sets provide them. To develop your own base price, weigh your entire set, and judge it against the current going rate for raw ivory. This is a base price only. You did well at $450 in the purchace, The price of ivory in 1975 was $50.00/lb., and ivory has soared since then, A pair of 5 x 2 x 3/8 inch slabs for a knife or pistol grips runs about #300.00. Google 'current ivory prices' and your work has just begun. The below site will get you into a world of chess sets, but you will be lucky to find yours.
