My wife found this last week and thought she would buy it for $22.00!
After doing much research online and in books, I have come to the fact that it is indeed from the 1920s. Mr. Stuart who started the company in 1899, didn't start using the "From Contented Cows" slogan on the cans until the 1930s. When Stuart started the company, he wanted an flower image that kids could remember when sent to get a can from the grocer. He had just bought a box of cigars that had some carnations on the lid, he thought this was the flower for his condensed milk. While in rough shape, it will still display nicely and the story is half the fun for us. The pipe on the side has a hole all the way through, this tells me it probably hung on a spindle or pole of some sort. Just the fact that this sign survived is amazing to us.

Very nice! It's hard to find signs that are not cola or petroliana related. A great find, indeed!
Thank you Mike, Jameyrd and fifties!
Thank ya Ed!
Hey thanks Michael, beachbomb and Manikin!
Thank you egreeley and Longings!
Love this sign! I collect carnation company items exclusively!
Hey thank you ttomtucker, sugargirl and Carnationkid!! I didn't know there was that much out there. Have you ever seen a better condition one out there like this?
Amazing that there is somebody out there for everything collectible.
This looks like a perfect candidate for a one-side resto, keeping the better side ,and restoring the lost.
Never even heard of carnation signs being out there, let alone someone specializing in collecting them.
Another great find Perry, don't know how I missed it before!
Thanks Bernie! My wife found this somewhere and surprised me with it one day last year. It's very thin sheet metal so it would be quite hard to restore I think.
I saw one many years ago. Would like to have one in my collection for sure . I collect everything from carnation company including signs. I have never found anyone else who collects carnation company items only. I have had a fascinating time collecting it. Most of my items were located before eBay existed. Ebay however has certainly been a boost to my collection. Look forward to hearing from everyone.
C'mon, you gotta post some pics of your collection for all to see. Don't be shy now, we all do it here, it's part of the fun!
Will do!
awesome we would get a good education out of it I'm sure!
