i used to use one like that when i was a silver/goldsmith.
My dad has one he aquired 70 years ago from Westinghouse Company. He called it a babbit hammer. He can't remember where he put it.
ho2cultcha,
I saw on-line that these are still made and were recommended for Jewelers, gunsmiths, woodworkers and metal workers. I have no idea how old this is. I found it in a box in my basement along with some other old tools. I do not know when I got it.

Thanks RonM for the comments and appreciation.
I remember my uncle talking about a babbit hammer. It might have been his. I handed his estate after his death and ended up with a lot of his tools.

Thanks petey for the appreciation.

Babbit is a type of metal (mostly lead, tin or copper) and was used in poured or cast bearings. It is very soft so a soft blow mallet had to be used around it.
