Okay 'Manikin' I need your help. However, first, I would like to ad that I admire your knowledge on dolls and I am learning allot from you. I love and read all your articles, you are one amazing lady. Thank you.
As for this doll I didn't even receive her yet. These are just pictures from the site that I won her on. Hope they are good enough. If not when I receive doll (approx. in a few more days) I will post more. First, I always wanted a Shirley Temple Doll, but know nothing about them. I do know eyes are important when buying a doll but I just couldn't resist her even with her cloudy eyes. She is a 1930's? composition 22" doll. Any information you can pass on to me would be greatly appreciated?

She is lovely doll and eyes can be fixed to be better as they have crystallized.
It looks like she is in very good condition I don't see any crazing which always makes me wonder if they have had work done or filler used . Is her back also marked Shirley temple ? I have published a few articles on Shirley Temple . Recently just sold a original dress for her . She is nice 22 Inch size . Her Mohair is nice and has been redone . But not right :-( Oh my if I could count the Shirleys I did hair on I would be rich . At doll hospital I got all the shirleys :-) What would you like to know about her . She is not in original clothes . Did the seller disclose any restoration ? I am sorry I missed your post by had trouble with my site on CW till today . She is marked correct for 1930's Ideal doll . My concern is that she has been re painted . That is not a bad thing but they should have told you . I could be wrong if I see photo's up close I should be able to tell . I do love her ! How can one not love Shirley !!!!!

First Manikin thank you for getting back to me. By the time I had seen the auction unfortunately it was ending and there were many bids on her, so not knowing too much about the doll I decided to take a chance. To me it doesn't look like she has any markings on her back. Does that mean it may be from a different doll part? You did answer some of my questions I am not to far from Madame Alexanders Doll Hosp. So I can probably take her there to have her eyes fix. (and whatever else). And I was wondering the same thing if she was re painted. How can I tell? I should be getting her real soon. I knew her outfit wasn't original it looks like a Halloween Costume. LOL. I also will have to hunt for her original outfit. Do you know what and where I could find one. I know the outfit will cost more than the doll. I guess I over paid for her at $155.00?
I really appreciate your help thank you so much. Kathy

Did you get her online auction ebay ? if so your safe . Her eyes can clear a bit but will still be crystallized but a bit clearer . I can tell you how to do it . Her dress size is harder to find than a smaller Shirley . You can expect to pay at today's reduced prices 50-100 for tagged dress . But if you put her in a correct age appropriate dress she will be fine . When you get her send me photo's of her face outside photo's so I can see it clear .

Yes Manikin I got her off of Ebay (wasn't sure if I was aloud to say that) I will sent you move pictures. Once again thank you for your help. Kathy

    Manikin, \
Wish I'd have seen your Shirley Temple Article. I will have to find it and read it tomorrow
  6. Manikin Manikin, 2 years ago
Kathy I have never posted any of them as it would disclose my real name to whole world . if you would like to email me I will send you photo's of articles . I am a big fan of having many books to reference by . I bought several books 30 years ago and still buy them . They always hold something new . I have 3 books on Shirley but many more as my interests in dolls covers 1700's to 1965 after that they started all being pretty much less interesting and not as well made with some exceptions . I love the history of them and like to know who owned and loved them .
  7. Manikin Manikin, 2 years ago
PS I think you did fine on price as she is a bit harder to find in the larger size :-) and so are her clothes :-( a repro dress would be fine on her . Why does her legs look like hard plastic ? That could be me but they sure look like it and her torso . let me know as soon as she arrives . If they are hard Plastic that is wrong for her . So hard to tell by photo's .

In October of 1934, Ideal applied
for a patent upon the Shirley Temple image of smiling Shirley with her left pointer finger by her cheek.

The heads had mohair wigs and sleep eyes. They have an open mouth with felt or metal tongue and teeth. The facial features
including eyebrow, eyelashes and lips were hand painted. Later dolls had higher coloring and eye shadow. These dolls are
referred to as the Make Up dolls. The eyes were made of glassine-a celluloid product which is not stable over time or when
exposed to heat and dry air. The glassine often crackled making the dolls look like they have “cataracts”. Caution must be
exercised when finding a doll with “perfect” eyes as the glassine is often replaced or oiled to improve the appearance of the doll.

The dolls heads were marked, initially, with only the Ideal mark:
    COP.IDEAL
    N & T
These dolls are the “prototypes” referring to the variation in facial features including wider cheeks and a more rounded
appearance made between October and December 1934. Later heads, after December 1934, were marked:
    SHIRLEY TEMPLE
    COP.IDEAL N & T CO.
The bodies were marked SHIRLEY TEMPLE.

Initially, the dolls were available in 15", 18", 20" and 22".

I can't tell what yours is marked by photo of the I am showing / That dates her

Hi Manikin, (is your name Mandy)
Yes I would love your e-mail. How do we go about that? After I won the doll. I wrote to the seller to ask him a few questions on the doll. I don't know if he really didn't know anything ???? or not??? He seem to not even know what a "mohair" wig is??? He didn't say much about the doll, only that it was a composition doll and that it was in excellent condition. Oh what he did say is that he thinks the outfit was original. I told him that the outfit did not look like a original outfit, but not important to me. Also I told him I couldn't read the writing on her neck if he can tell me what it say. He never replied to me on that. Wow, if her body is hard plastic than he really did misrepresent her. (my eyes are not the greatest anymore, so I didn't even notice that) I guess I will probably still keep her, luckily I didn't purchase her to make money.
Thank you for all your info. I cant wait to get her. I just tracked her down and she is not to far from me, so I think another day or so.
Again I would love to get your email. Kathy
P.S. my keys on my lap top are not working right, so I am having a bit of a problem typing. lol

Hi kathy . My keyboard does that at times too or there is a delay :-) She is nice doll Kathy . IF her body is hard plastic then that would be only reason to return her . But so hard to tell on photo , it is not uncommon for these dolls to be restored and whoever did her did a nice job . Let's wait and see when she comes and when a face speaks to you and you fall in love with her that is the important thing . You can always get a dress appropraite for her . It does not have to be a tagged Shirley but maybe a repro . The old ones she wore get pretty fragile . The 2 I had from her era were and could be easily torn .
Manikin1234@aol.com is my email you can send me a email I will show you books ok :-)

    Hi Manikin,
I feel like such a idiot. I wrote above that I will take her to the Madame Alexanders Doll Hosp. (No such doll hosp). I don't know what I was thinking at the time, it's just called: NY Doll Hospital. LOL Kathy

    Hi Manikin,
You're the BEST! You were 100% CORRECT her body is all "Hard Plastic". (Truthfully I was hoping for the first time that you would've been wrong).
Thank you so very much for all your help. Kathy
  15. Manikin Manikin, 2 years ago
Glad I could help . I know you wanted her to be right but there are some dealers out there that will swap bodies and not disclose . You should get a full refund . Sorry to hear she was not authentic body as that makes her value close to zero a little for head and that is all . Good we caught it and I knew once you saw her in person you could tell about body . LOL you wanted me to wrong so she was correct right :-) I will keep in touch when you find another ok and will look at it before you bid :-)
  16. Kathycat Kathycat, 2 years ago
Yes! I did want her soooo bad. However I am soooo glad YOU caught it in time!
Manikin, That sounds 'GREAT' I would like that very much if you would check it out before I place a bid on another Shirley Temple Doll .
    You're the Greatest! Thanks Kathy

    Hi Manikin,
I am so sorry that I had originally misrepresented her to you in the first place. I really thought her body was of hard plastic. Whoever restored her did a great job.
You are the Best. Thank you. Kathy
