I've had these two glasses by Claus Josef Riedel now for about a month. I think they are lovely! Simply elegant! They have the ring of a well tuned bell.
I've been searching high and low, but the only reference I have for them comes from my Taschen source book "60's Decorative Art " by Charlotte & Peter Fiell. These books have been helpful over the years in providing me with stimulus before I go out on the hunt. On this occasion I went to a shop here in Sydney and saw these two for a couple of dollars each in the window. From the outside I though maybe they were Orrefors. I went in and saw that both of them had rectangular labels, one slightly different to the other. Out came the loupe and I saw that they were Riedel. The labels were different to the Riedel labels today. Each of them has an etched mark to the centre of the foot. The mark is JR within a large C made out of three separated lines. I think this is the mark of Professor CLAUS J. RIEDEL.
There's some interesting discussion about this 'sand-blasted' signature on the net:
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php?topic=6825.0
Ivo Haanstra makes the point that the design of the mark changes from year to year. "I believe the Riedels re-established their industry in Austria in 1955; the CJR (Claus-Josef Riedel) monogram was introduced 1960. The monogram changes from year to year - so the Riedels can tell from the monogram when the piece was made. Not sure if this information is found anywhere else... it is not on their website".
These glasses are described by the Fiell's as being "Tulip shaped" and they appear on page 382 as being 1965-1966. The shape is similar to the current production pieces: 'Sommeliers' Burgundy Grand Cru. But it is quite different too! The lip is much more everted on these two glasses of mine.

The height is unusual as well. Both have the same shaped bowl: 8.5 cm wide at the lip. The bowl is 10 cm at its widest. The foot is also 10 cm across.
The smaller glass is 21 cm tall and the larger one is 26 cm tall! It's a monster! The photo in the Fiell's book has these glasses in what looks to be at least five different heights.
I have two.
The hunt begins for the other three!
8.5 cm = 3.35"
10 cm = 3.95"
21cm = 8.27"
26 cm = 10.24"

If you can help me with any more information about these glasses I'd appreciate your input.

Many thanks Sean and bratjdd too! The firm goes back to 1756 and was started by Johann Christoph Riedel. Claus Josef was the ninth generation of the family. It was he who began the collection of glasses we now know as "Riedel". He died in 2004.

Very beautiful glasses! Are these vino glasses? They are enormous! Could be dangerous! Perhaps a Hurricane or other slushy beverage would be less dangerous. Ha! Iced tea with lots of citrus and ice - that sounds safe.

Many thanks for the warning miKKo.
    And for for the recipes!
Riedel has one glass that holds more than one bottle it seems.
The Burgundy Grand Cru Sommeliers holds 1050 ccm or 37 oz.

    I have not experimented, yet!

    Hi Sean!
I re-read your comment about the numbers on the sticker.
I had a look and there are no numbers at all.
I think these are early stickers.

hello vetraio50 . so these could be in fact from 1959-1960s?
  17. BELLIN68 BELLIN68, 9 months ago
in that book did say what year they started dating on the stickers for riedel glasses:)

I think they are actually that early. There is very little written about the early pieces. They are still producing for the luxury market, as you know. I had always used Orrefors Illusion at home in those days in the 70's. They were cheap and cheerful then. It seems that they began a revival in 1959 at Brussels World Fair. They won a Grand Prix there.
The Fiell book just has one picture and just a four line explanation as I've mentioned. These books are real eye candy. I feed on them.
I've been trawling the net for details for the last month with little success. But another set of eyes .......
