found out about this medal on line was they where never given out . the 5th GEBIRGS DIVISION was a mountain troop in 1945 westalpen front . if anyone has information on what it is worth i would love to know . i put a magnet to it and it does not stick . there is a story on line about how this medals came to be . i have to look it up again. well thanks for your time i hope you can help .

Let it soak in oil for a few months. That will stop the verdigris from speading. Even in it's pitted condition it is still a rare find!
This medal brings to mind a story from my mom's youth. She was born and raised in the Bavarian Alps before and during the nazi era. The local Bavarian boys refused to join the SS and always wanted to join the Mountain Troops. The rivalry between the two groups was intense and when beer and girls were added to the mix it became deadly. There was a mountain side night spot with an out door terrace that had a 3 foot or so wall at the edge of a 50 to 100 foot cliff. One night the SS boys got into it with some of the Bavarians. The SS boys soon found out that they bit off more than they could chew and according to the Bavarians, tried to escape by jumping over the wall in the darkness not realizing how high up they were. The official charges were that the SS boys were helped over the wall. None of the Bavarians ever changed their story and no one was convicted.
