This item is originally from the Groningen university, founded 1640.
Sorry if in wrong category.
The knocker itsself is 7.5cm long and in 5 width and the whole thing is 130 grams.
In Latin: Academia Groningana. The text on the book says: 'Verbum Domini lucerna pedibus nostris' It is worn of but could match it with the one on the building. I bought it for 45euro's I am from Groningen and loved it instantly.
It has the shield of Groningen on it. I assumed it was brass, still a bit heavy. But now I think it might be (fire)gilded heavily. Plus the worn of letters still LOOK like gold to me. The part that is mounted to the door looks like copper (pic 3) . the piece it self maybe lead? On pic 4 you see the backside.
Has anyone an idea how old it might be and if its really (fire)gilded.
(In Holland that firegilding forbidden from 1830)
or that I might be totally wrong. (I do know how gold looks and feels and so fort but still..)
