it took me a couple of weeks to figure out what these are, so i'm going to see if you all can figure it out quicker. i'll bet you can! they are quite large - one is almost three feet long and they are very heavy iron or steel. should i give a prize to the one who figures it out first? i'll send something very unusual and interesting/cool to the one who figures it out first.

Those have to be cornice hooks.

walksoftly won - way too quickly! they are cornice hooks for hanging scaffolding on mostly victorian buildings - ones w/ large cornices. these hooks are huge - you could hook and hang a large whale on one! so walksoftly - write to me off-line and i'll send you your prize [even though you guessed it way too fast].
