i'd love to know more about the strange crate in the first photo. i found it on my favorite 'drift-lumber' beach near me. i put the stone on top and called it a table, but have no idea what it was beforehand. i have several rolls of the wallpaper in pic 2 and use it as a background for collages, old prints, etc... an old wooden box i use to store parts for future sculptures, and a beautiful 10 lb hammer which i think was used to pound spikes for train tracks.
Picture 1 appears to be cribbing, an assembled stack of wood to support large heavy items, boats buildings equipment.
Picture 2 is a post mall, a type of sledge hammer used to pound in stakes or posts. We used one of these on the farm many times, as we had miles of fencing that needed maintenance. They were not meant for hitting steel as they are not hardened.
Hammers for driving rail spikes are long & slender.

Most welcome ho2, the only time we use that thing now is when we have go somewhere we can't get to with the hydraulic post pounder.
